Après-ski in Austria for Beginners!

The place to be
Austria is the ultimate country to hit the town after skiing or snowboarding. Many tourists specifically travel to the Alpine country for après-ski. Austrian bars cleverly cater to this by booking certain artists to meet the musical preferences of their audience. This creates a lively atmosphere of conviviality!Consumptions
Music significantly contributes to the atmosphere, as do the typical winter sports drinks for many. Popular choices include hot beverages like mulled wine, a Hot Chocolate with rum, and Schnapps. Additionally, buying a round of beers or enjoying a 'Willy mit Birne' is an indispensable part of the experience for many. A Dutch treat often consumed during après-ski is Flügel. A well-known German shot, the Jägerbomb, is also beloved, and the Austrian energy drink Red Bull is an essential ingredient for many mixed drinks.Rules
Après-ski has some unwritten rules, such as not heading to the chalet first to shower, and everyone keeps their ski clothing on during the festivities. Both thick jackets and pants serve as trendy clothing items, and ski goggles hanging around the neck serve as fashionable accessories. The way everyone is dressed contributes to the unique atmosphere of après-ski. Additionally, it's almost an obligation to sing along to all the songs, so make sure to learn a few hits by heart a few weeks before departure.Short Parties
What characterizes the parties is that they are relatively short and intense. Après-ski often starts around 4:00 PM and ends around 8:00 PM. Once the evening falls and the bar closes, partygoers ski back home or to the valley. So, make sure not to forget where the skis are placed before entering the party tent!Close the winter sports season well: Go skiing during Easter!

Fascinating Facts for fans of Austria!

Austria; a stunning country with unique mountain landscapes that attract tourists from around the world for unforgettable winter sports adventures, breathtaking mountain hikes, and gourmet delights that make your taste buds rejoice. Located in the heart of Europe, amidst the breathtaking Alps, Austria serves as a natural border between the north and south of the continent. Despite being twice the size of the Netherlands, the birthplace of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wolfgang Mozart, and Niki Lauda has only half the population.
Austria is likely a well-known holiday destination for many, but did you know, for example, that the name comes from the German word "Ostarrichi," meaning eastern land? Discover such fascinating facts about the beloved holiday destination and much more in this blog!
Slogan
Austrians prefer travelers to keep coming to their favorite holiday destination. To prevent tourists from accidentally booking a ticket to Australia instead of Austria, the locals have come up with a humorous slogan for Austria: "No kangaroos in Austria." This slogan is often used on road signs and souvenirs.
Winter Sports
In addition to this lighthearted approach by the Austrians, the country is, of course, known for its fantastic winter sports opportunities. The Alpine country is, figuratively speaking, one large ski area. This places them in third position globally with over 3525 lifts, surpassed only by the United States and Japan. However, Austria not only boasts impressive ski resorts but also had a notable record holder: Harry Egger was the fastest skier in the world for three years. The almost 60-year-old daredevil achieved an astonishing speed of 248 km/h in 1999 on the Les Arcs circuit in France!
Mystical Discovery
It was not the only remarkable event that took place in the Austrian mountains in the 1990s. In 1991, a fascinating discovery was made: a frozen mummy of a 35-year-old man, 160 cm tall, who lived more than 5000 years ago. A discovery that adds a mystical touch to the rich history of the country, or so it was assumed. After thorough research, however, it turned out that Ötzi, as the mummy is called, was not found in Austria but just 92 meters across the border in Italy.
Despite the disappointing outcome of the research, Austria eventually got its own Ötzi: a popular Austrian DJ, known for the hit 'Anton aus Tirol,' goes by the stage name DJ Ötzi!
Spectacular Landscape
One thing that is not kept secret is the beauty of the Krimml Waterfalls. These stunning cascades, with a height of 380 meters, are the highest in Europe and therefore an impressive spectacle to visit. It's no surprise that Austria harbors such beautiful waterfalls when you consider that 62% of the Austrian territory is occupied by the enchanting Alps. The Grossglockner mountain is considered the highest point, making it an iconic feature of the Austrian Alps.
First time on a winter sports trip? This ski equipment is necessary!

Essential
A good ski outfit is crucial. The most important thing is that you can safely glide down the mountain and that skiing itself is an enjoyable experience. Most of the time, you can rent the necessary ski gear at your ski destination. Additionally, you can purchase them in the Netherlands from specialized ski shops or borrow them from a friend or family member. The latter is generally not recommended, as many ski items are tailored to your own height, weight, skill level, or skiing style.Skis
First and foremost, it's important to decide what type of skis you want. If you plan to do freestyle skiing, for example, you'll need different skis than if you just want to ski down the slopes. Therefore, it's crucial to select your skis based on the skiing style you intend to practice. You should also consider the terrain you'll be skiing on. The seller or renter can always assist you with advice.Additionally, ensure that your ski bindings are suitable for your skis and fit precisely. Incorrect binding adjustments can lead to injuries, and you certainly want to avoid that!

The Almabtrieb in Austria

Almabtrieb is an annual festival in Austria. It is a farming tradition that celebrates the return of cattle (cows and sheep) to the stables. During the spring and summer months, the livestock grazes in the mountain meadows, and when autumn arrives, the farmers drive the animals back to the meadows in the valleys and the stables. This is celebrated with various activities that make Austria worth visiting in the autumn.
Also in autumn, Austria is definitely worth a visit!

Non-alcoholic recommendations:
You must try the typical Austrian soft drink called Almdudler (Alm Dudeln means yodeling)! Almdudler is a refreshing drink made from alpine herbs, but its exact recipe is a well-kept secret. Also, give holunderblütensaft a try. This special drink, based on elderflower syrup, is a true specialty and not only refreshing but also has medicinal properties. Usually, the elderflower syrup is diluted with sparkling mineral water. Austrians also use the same sparkling water in a "Gespritzter Apfelsaft," also often called Apfelschorle. The delightful local apple juice provides an instant energy boost, while the combination with mineral water is also great for quenching thirst. On the menus of many mountain huts and restaurants, you'll also find johannesbeersaft, a dark, sweet juice made from currants, which is also mixed with sparkling water or mineral water. Finally, during the summer season, you can order a glass of 'skiwasser.' This energy booster is a mixture of raspberry syrup, lemon juice, and mineral water. It's wonderfully refreshing! The Most Beautiful Hikes in Tyrol
