Why Spring Is the Perfect Time for a Holiday in Austria

Spring in Austria is a season full of contrasts. While there may still be a dusting of snow on the mountaintops, down in the valleys nature is coming back to life in all its glory. Blooming alpine meadows, gushing streams and crisp mountain air make spring perhaps the most beautiful time of year for a holiday in the mountains. And the best part? You’ll share the landscape with far fewer people than during the busy winter or summer seasons. In this blog, you’ll discover what makes a springtime holiday in Austria so special and what there is to do.
1. Peace, space and pure mountain air
Spring brings a wonderful stillness to the mountains. The skiers have gone home, and the summer crowds are still far off. That means: walking without passing anyone, enjoying a scenic viewpoint at your own pace, and truly unwinding. No queues, no packed terraces. Just you, the mountains, and fresh, clean air. No traffic jams, unless you count the occasional herd of cows on the trail. Spring is when Austria catches its breath. And so can you.
2. Walking and cycling in pleasant spring temperatures
Spring is the ideal season for an active holiday. The temperatures are usually just right. Not too hot, not too cold. Perfect for walking or cycling without overheating, while still enjoying plenty of sunshine. Snow may still cling to the highest peaks, but down in the valleys the grass turns green, the flowers bloom, and the streams begin to flow.
In the areas around our chalets, you’ll find stunning walking routes and well-maintained cycle paths. For a little extra help, there are plenty of e-bike options. Ideal for exploring the mountains with ease. Even better: many cable cars start running again in spring, making it easy to reach higher ground for even more spectacular views.
Whether you’re in the mood for a gentle walk, a challenging ride or something in between, spring shows you the mountains at their most colourful and accessible.
3. Village charm and sunny terraces
Even though the season is quieter, that doesn’t mean everything is closed. Quite the opposite! Many villages come to life with a relaxed springtime charm. Local markets, small events and open alpine huts offer a warm welcome.
On sunny days, there’s nothing better than sitting on the terrace of a mountain hut or café. A good coffee, some Kaiserschmarrn or a hearty snack, and a view of the snow-covered peaks (with a bit of luck, you won’t even need your jacket – hello, spring joy!). Spring is the perfect time to experience true Austrian hospitality, without the crowds of high season.
4. Austrian spring: traditions and rural life
Spring is also the time when rural life in Austria blossoms. Cows and sheep return to the alpine meadows, farms open their doors, and local markets showcase the best of the season.
You may even be able to visit a working farm, sample homemade cheese or schnapps, and see just how strong the connection to nature still is here. In some villages, spring is celebrated with traditional festivals, such as raising a maypole or performances by local brass bands. This is Austria at its purest: welcoming, down-to-earth and proud of its heritage.
Before you know it, you're hooked!
Spring in Austria is fresh, peaceful and wonderfully varied. Whether you're here for nature, tranquillity or quality time with your partner or family, this season lets you experience a different, and perhaps more authentic, side of the Alps. And after a day in the great outdoors, it’s extra lovely to come home to a cosy chalet.
Let yourself be charmed by Austria in spring.
