Those looking for high-octane pursuits can really push themselves to the limit here, while those who’d rather something more relaxed can take it at their own pace with a laid-back hike instead. The Salzburgerland region has more than 7,000 kilometres of cycle paths and mountain bike trails in total, ensuring there’s something to accommodate all levels of adrenaline junkie.
Krimmler Waterfalls
The Krimmler Waterfalls are a sight to behold. This wondrous waterfall is 380 metres in height, making it the largest one of its kind in Europe. The water itself descends in three phases, with even the shortest boasting a drop of 100 metres. In the immediate vicinity there’s a 4 kilometre walking route with numerous viewing platforms so you can get a better perspective on this inspiring local landmark. Water Sports

In Hinterthal, there’s plenty in the way of water sporting goodness to get excited about. Several rivers and lakes can be found in the region, allowing you to canoe, kayak, water ski, surf, sail and much more. A sailing school is on hand to get you up to speed on the maritime basics, while a rental centre means you can stock up on all the kit you need.
World of the Ice Giants
This spectacular attraction is another essential addition to any itinerary. However, you’ll want to prepare yourself for a bit of a hike before you can savour the sights, with the trip to these stunning caves an experience itself. Once you’ve hiked your way to these caves you’ll be treated to one of the largest underground cave networks in the world. Once you’ve entered, you’ll be transported back in time to when this part of the world was in the full grip of an ice age. Remember to pack some warmer layers with you before you head out, with temperatures in the caves often falling below zero. A cable car carries you for the last leg of the outgoing journey, bringing you to the entrance of the caves at an altitude of approximately 1,640 metres.
Tobogganing in Saalfelden
In the summer, there’s no excuse for not giving the nearby toboggan run a try. The Alpine Coaster is a popular attraction in Saalfelden, with a total run length of 1.6 kilometres that boasts plenty of bends and jumps to test your nerves. Brace yourself for the ride of your life!
Swimming in Maria Alm
You can take the edge off a hot summer day with a trip to the swimming pool in nearby Maria Alm, only 8 kilometres from Hinterthal itself. This outdoor pool is ideal for families with little ones, with the slide on site stretching for a whopping 40 metres. While the kids enjoy the water, parents can kick back and relax poolside as the sun shines on.
Golf
When the sun is shining, head to the golf course. There’s no course within the limits of Hinterthal itself, but you can travel to nearby Urslautal for a first class place to perfect your swing. This spectacular golf course has a full 18 holes and is situated between Maria Alm and Saalfelden. Ideal for both beginners and those with a little more experience, it’s a popular option for summer holidaymakers looking for a great day out.
