This area is a hidden gem, with its UNESCO-awarded nature and fifteen picturesque mountain villages. A small region, but big in possibilities. Five things you didn't know about this region:

1. Sixty mountain lakes and seventy mountain huts

You'll love exploring the sixty mountain lakes within the Lungau region - walking from one beautiful view over the crystal clear water to another. Along the way, stop at one of the seventy mountain huts for a regional snack. All mountain huts prepare dishes using local products, so there are treats in store. On our page, 'Hiking in the Lungau Region', you will find more information about hiking routes in this region.

You could not wish for a better environment for discovery trips with the whole family. Thanks to the vast, sunny, and mainly flat valley floors, cycling in this region is fun for everyone. There is an extensive network of more than 500 km of bicycle paths on which mountain bikers, touring cyclists, and recreational cyclists will get their money's worth. You can also easily combine cycling tours in the Lungau region with a visit to numerous attractions such as outdoor swimming pools, wellness centers, castles, and museums. Would you prefer to take it easy during your holiday? Why not go for a trip with the e-bike? Lungau is the highest e-bike region in Austria, with more than 100 e-bike charging stations. More sporty cyclists can look forward to 18 mountain bike routes - the Lungau EXTREME tour is the absolute highlight.

In the Lungau region, you can spend infinite time outdoors. For example, go water sports on the river Mur where you can opt for an afternoon of kayaking, rafting, canoeing, or canyoning. Would you like to take a refreshing dip at the end? You will find several swimming pools in the region, such as Schwimmbad Mariapfarr and Erlebnisbad Mauterndorf. Wherever you stay, an afternoon of water fun is always nearby.

Do you love hitting the fairways? We recommend visiting the Golfclub Lungau, where you can enjoy yourself on the 18-hole golf course. If you are on holiday with the family, miniature golf in Mauterndorf and St. Michael is a must. The Lungau region also offers plenty of cultural interest, thanks to the many castles and castles such as the Burgerlebnis Mauterndorf and Lungauer. 4. Traditions and Regional Customs

Lungau is known for its lively folk culture in which Alpine customs and traditions play an important role. During the Lungau Alpine Summer and Harvest Festival, tourists and locals celebrate centuries-old festivals side by side. Traditions are handed down within families over many generations, such as the unique Samson parades and the renowned Prangstangen festivities held in Muhr and Zederhaus.

Did you know that you can find 10 of the 12 Samson figures in this region? Of the twelve Samson figures in the inner-alpine region, ten are located in the Salzburger Lungau: Mariapfarr, St. Andrä, Mauterndorf, Muhr, Ramingstein, St. Margarethen, St. Michael, Tamsweg, Unternberg and Wölting and two in the neighbouring Styria: Krakaudorf and Murau.

5. UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau

In July 2012, the Salzburger Lungau was awarded the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This is an exceptional award as it makes the region the youngest and largest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in all of Austria. The extraordinary quality of the natural beauty, the way of life in the area where people live and work authentically with respect for the natural environment, and the protection of culture and traditions have contributed to this important award.
