Austria is best known worldwide as a winter sports destination, with breathtaking mountains and cosy chalets where you can fully relax. But beyond ski resorts and snowy landscapes, Austria also has a lot to offer when it comes to food. Austrian cuisine is rich and hearty, and one of its most famous dishes is Tiroler Gröstl. This dish is a true Alpine classic and immediately evokes memories of warm, rustic inns after a long day on the slopes.

The Story Behind Tiroler Gröstl

Austrian dishes often come with a story, and Tiroler Gröstl is no exception. The dish originates from the Tyrol region, which is known for its mountains and charming guesthouses. According to an old legend, the chefs in these inns often prepared more food than the guests could eat. The leftovers were then used to create a meal for the staff. This dish became so popular that it eventually made its way into Austrian cuisine as the famous Tiroler Gröstl.

Ingredients for 4 People:

  • 650 g potatoes
  • 350 g diced bacon
  • 1 onion
  • 90 g butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon marjoram
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons parsley
  • 2 tablespoons extra butter

How to Prepare Tiroler Gröstl:

  1. Boil the potatoes: Boil the potatoes in their skins for about 10 minutes. Drain them, allow them to cool slightly, then peel and slice them into thin rounds.
  2. Fry the base: Heat some butter in a large pan and sauté the onion until it becomes translucent. Add the sliced potatoes and fry them, turning regularly, until they are golden brown and crispy.
  3. Add the bacon: Stir in the diced bacon and fry until crispy. Season the dish with salt, pepper, and marjoram – feel free to adjust the seasoning to your taste.
  4. Fry the eggs: In a separate pan, fry the eggs in a little butter. Cook them to your preference – with a runny yolk or well done.
  5. Serve and enjoy: Divide the Tiroler Gröstl onto plates, place a fried egg on top, and sprinkle with parsley. Now it's time to dig in!

Variations on Tiroler Gröstl

The classic version of Tiroler Gröstl is already delicious, but you can easily make it your own. Try adding sliced sausage or beef for an extra layer of flavour. You can also adjust the seasoning to your liking – not everyone is a fan of marjoram, so feel free to use your favourite spices.

And what pairs perfectly with a hearty plate of Tiroler Gröstl? A cold beer! It completes the dish and brings an extra touch of Austrian charm to your meal.

Whether you've just returned from a skiing holiday or simply fancy a hearty meal, Tiroler Gröstl is always a great choice. It’s a simple yet flavourful dish that you can prepare in no time. So, grab the ingredients and enjoy a taste of Austria in your own kitchen!
