Destination summary

The extremely popular holiday resorts of Saalbach and Hinterglemm are located in Salzburg Land on the border with Tyrol and are surrounded by the mountains of the Pinzgau. Saalbach is the more modern of the two villages, while Hinterglemm offers even more village atmosphere. Originally the villages were 4km apart, but as they grew they became more and more close to each other. Hinterglemm has grown into a village almost as big as the older Saalbach. Both villages are largely car-free due to the tunnels that were built around the village centres.

Saalbach Hinterglemm lies at an altitude of about 1000 metres in the Glemm valley and not far from Kaprun. Saalbach and Hinterglemm belong to the ski circus Saalbach - Hinterglemm - Leogang. In winter 2015/2016, the connection to Fieberbrunn behind the Tyrolean border was opened, making the entire region the largest interconnected ski area in Austria.

In both villages, you will find supermarkets, shops, several restaurants and opportunities to go out. Both Saalbach and Hinterglemm offer excellent après-ski opportunities, from the 'Schirmbars' to various mountain huts such as the Pfefferalm. And if you still have enough energy, you can go skiing in the evening on the illuminated piste in Hinterglemm. For those who prefer romance, there is a choice between torchlight hikes, romantic horse-drawn sleigh rides or snowshoe hikes.

The village of Vorderglemm is about 4km from Saalbach. Vorderglemm is a much quieter, small village on the edge of the tourist attractions Saalbach and Hinterglemm. From here there is a connection to the Schönleiten Railway. Vorderglemm is particularly suitable for families with children. With a valid ski pass, you can use all ski buses in Glemmtal. Ski buses run in Saalbach-Hinterglemm and between Leogang and Saalfelden. However, there is no bus connection between Saalbach-Hinterglemm and Leogang. If you want to go there directly, you have to put on your skis.
