Mauterndorf in the Lungau region is a cosy winter sports village with a historic village centre that offers all the possibilities for an ideal family holiday. The skiing area Großeck-Speiereck is an ideal family skiing area with many blue and red slopes and is therefore also suitable for beginners. Some black slopes are available as a challenge for advanced skiers.

In the cosy and historic centre of Mauterndorf you will find small restaurants and shops. Bread can still be bought from the baker, butchers offer a selection of local specialities and restaurant staff still wear typical Austrian clothing. The après-ski takes place in some bars. Every winter sports enthusiast feels at home in Mauterndorf!

In addition to skiing, Mauterndorf has much more to offer, such as walks in the snow. A popular hiking trail leads from the historic market square to the ski centre, passing the imposing Mauterndorf Castle on the way. At the end of the hike, you can warm up in the restaurant Schi Alm and then make your way back. The beautiful winter landscape in Lungau is perfect for a tour in a horse-drawn sleigh. You can also ice skate on the natural skating rink at the public swimming pool.

The scenic charms and the rural area immediately create a holiday atmosphere. The Tauern mountains are still relatively high here, while the landscape is already characterised by gentle hilltops and lovely valleys. The Lungau has the most hours of sunshine in the whole of Austria!

About the ski resorts

Here you are spoilt for choice. The Lungau alone offers three ski resorts in the immediate vicinity, each with its own special charm. Großeck-Speiereck offers a lot of relatively gentle terrain at a snow-sure altitude, Fanningberg impresses with short distances and some fast descents, Katschberg-Aineck offers many slopes in the medium difficulty range. If you can't get enough, Obertauern has another 100 kilometres of slopes waiting for you.

Ski area Großeck-Speiereck

The area around Mauterndorf is modern, but yet also conveys a romantic atmosphere. There is a very fast cable car, modern chairlifts, beautiful slopes and almost no waiting times! After a strenuous and active day of skiing, you can enjoy your après-ski in the various umbrella bars and ski huts. The actual skiing area of Mauterndorf, Großeck-Speiereck, reaches from 1,100 to 2,400 metres. It is therefore very snow-sure and very pleasant to ski due to the high sunshine. The area has slopes with a total length of 50km. Half of the slopes are blue, one-third red and the rest black. The 4.5km-long descent to Mauterndorf certainly offers the most intense experience.

Ski area Obertauern

The Obertauern ski area is about 15 minutes by car from Mauterndorf. It is one of the most snow-sure areas in the Alps. The snow conditions are perfect from the end of November until the beginning of May, ensuring that Obertauern can offer a ski season of 160 days! The area varies in altitude from 1,630 to 2,313 metres and has 26 modern lifts, all ensuring excellent connections. The 100 kilometres are mainly divided between blue and red slopes. This makes the ski area very suitable for beginners. For advanced skiers, there is a black slope with a length of about 4km. In addition, the region fascinates with lively ski routes, off-piste runs and skiing on an illuminated slope in the evening hours.

Ski resorts Lungau

In addition to Großeck-Speiereck (50km), the ski areas of Katschberg/Aineck (approx. 70km of slopes), Fanningberg (approx. 30km of slopes) and Obertauern (approx. 100km) also belong to the Lungau and can be reached from Mauterndorf in 10 to 20 minutes by car. There are also excellent ski bus connections between the ski areas. With a valid ski pass, you can use the hourly ski bus free of charge. In the skiing area Großeck-Speiereck there are even buses every 15 minutes from Mauterndorf.

Ski pass

The LUNGO ski pass offers you the possibility of endless skiing pleasure. With this pass, you have access to all Lungau ski areas and small lifts, including the Obertauern ski area, with 300km of slopes from Katschberg to Obertauern.

Snowboarding

The Katschberg ski area has a half-pipe and there is a great park in the Fanningberg ski area. In the Obertauern ski area, snowboarders can let off steam with various easy lines and medium lines in the 'The Spot' snow park. Snowboarding is also possible elsewhere for those looking to venture further afield.

Cross-country skiing

Mauterndorf also has a very large and beautiful network of cross-country trails. The trail runs directly along the houses, so you can start right away! Cross-country skiers have the choice between excellent cross-country trails in the valley or the high trails on the Katschberg and in Obertauern. In total there are around 30 cross-country trails available in the Lungau.

Tobogganing

In the evening you can toboggan on a 300-metre long natural toboggan run near Mauterndorf Castle. There are also various tobogganing possibilities near the ski lift.
