Destination summary

The traditional Austrian village Maria Alm is situated at an altitude of 800 m directly opposite the impressive massif of the Hochkönig near the Steinernen Meer in the Berchtesgaden Alps in the midst of a majestic and pointed alpine landscape. The Hochkönig is a 2,941m-high mountain in the Salzburger Land and dominates all surrounding mountain ranges.

The village of Maria Alm is easily arrived at. The picturesque village is almost completely car-free and ideal for anyone looking for peace and quiet. There is a varied range of shops and supermarkets for daily errands as well as several ski schools. Those who want to experience an authentic slice of Austrian life is certainly in the right place here.

The villages of Maria Alm and Hinterthal more or less merge into each other. Not far away are Dienten and Mühlbach, which are also directly connected to the skiing area. Many slopes go down to the villages and can be used until the spring season. A ski bus regularly runs the route Maria Alm - Aberg - Hintermoos - Hinterthal. The ski buses in Hochkönig can be used by skiers with ski equipment and a valid ski pass.

Not only will those looking for spectacular slopes love it here, but those after cross-country options also have plenty to get excited about, with a remarkable choice of runs. There’s also a wide variety of hiking trails, an illuminated toboggan run that is sure to delight young and old alike, plus the option to enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the spectacular scenery. Maria Alm also has several local restaurants and après-ski bars where you can spend the evenings.

About the ski resorts

Nobody forgets a stay at the Hochkönig. The impressive backdrop of grey rock dominates the panorama of the entire ski area, which stretches over five mountains and offers many upscale places to stop. Particularly popular is the over 30km-long route over all peaks.

 

In the village of Maria Alm

In Maria Alm there are some slopes directly in the village which are ideal for beginners. From the Natrun lift, you can reach the Aberg gondola via the Sonnberg descent, from which you can easily reach the surrounding ski areas. Maria Alm belongs to the Hochkönig ski region.

Hochkönig ski area

In the Hochkönig ski area, you can enjoy wonderful slopes with guaranteed snow at an altitude of 860 to 1900 metres. Snow cannons are used every winter to guarantee the best snow for winter sports enthusiasts. In total there are 33 lifts and you can use no less than 120km of slopes, of which 52km are blue slopes, 41km red slopes and 9km black slopes. There are also 8km of ski routes.

 

Ski Amadé

There are plenty of challenges for advanced skiers, as the Hochkönig ski area is part of the more extensive Ski amadé region. Ski Amadé is a network of the Schladming/Dachstein Tauern, Salzburger Sportwelt, Hochkönig, Gastein and Grossarltal regions with a total of 760km of slopes and 270 lifts!

 

Ski pass

In the Hochkönig region, the ski pass is used for the Ski Amadé region. With this ski pass, you can ski and snowboard in the entire Ski Amadé region provided the validity period is longer than one day. If you’re after a bit more flexibility when it comes to time, you can also take a day ticket. This is only valid in the Hochkönig region. Apart from that, you can also use the Salzburg Super Ski Card. This card is valid in the 21 ski regions and offers access to 2,540km of slopes!

 

Tobogganing

For lovers of tobogganing, there are several possibilities in the Hochkönig ski area. In Hinterthal there is a toboggan run at Gasthof Jufenalm. The Jufenalm toboggan run with a length of 2.5km is situated on a north slope and delivers an impressive snow-guarantee!

 

Cross-country skiing

Maria Alm is the ideal choice for cross-country skiing lovers. The Hochkönig area has a total of 40km of cross-country ski runs, including 30km in Maria Alm alone. Even the most experienced runners will feel at home here, with the 7km-long panorama trail between Dienten and Mühlbach guaranteed to impress. In the evening hours, the illuminated Gasteglloipe is still accessible.
