Ski Holidays in Austria with Young Children: What Really Works (and What Doesn't)?

By: Team ChaletsPlus at 12 June 2026

A ski holiday with young children is very different from a ski trip with adults. While you may have spent entire days on the slopes in the past, family ski holidays are all about enjoying quality time together. With the right preparation, a ski holiday in Austria can become a wonderful experience for the whole family. However, some choices can make the trip unnecessarily challenging.

The purpose of this blog is to help parents plan a relaxed ski holiday with young children. Based on the experiences of our guests, we share what works well in practice and what is best avoided.

Choose a Family Friendly Ski Resort

A common mistake is focusing mainly on the number of kilometres of ski slopes. When travelling with young children, other factors are often much more important. Think of a manageable ski area, quality ski schools, beginner slopes and family friendly facilities.

Regions such as the Wildkogel Arena, Hochkönig, Zell am See Kaprun and the Zillertal Arena are popular with families because children can discover skiing in a relaxed and enjoyable way. Wide slopes, modern lifts and excellent ski schools help both parents and children make the most of their day on the mountain.

What Really Works When Skiing with Young Children?

Our biggest piece of advice is simple: adjust your expectations. Young children do not need to spend entire days on skis to have an amazing holiday. A few hours of ski lessons in the morning are often more than enough. Afterwards, there is plenty of time for other winter activities such as sledding, building a snowman or enjoying a hot chocolate together on a sunny terrace.

Your accommodation also plays an important role. A spacious chalet close to the slopes can make all the difference. If a child becomes tired or needs a break, you can quickly return to your chalet. This offers far more flexibility than having to walk back to a distant car park with all your equipment.

Families also appreciate the freedom that comes with staying in their own chalet. Children can go to bed early while parents relax, enjoy a leisurely dinner or unwind in the sauna.

What Doesn't Work So Well?

Many families want to get the most out of their first ski holiday. Ironically, this is often what leads to disappointment. A packed schedule with long days on the slopes is usually not ideal. Young children become tired more quickly due to all the new experiences, the cold weather and the physical effort. Families who allow enough time for breaks often notice that everyone enjoys the holiday much more.

Accommodation located far from the slopes can also prove less practical than expected. When travelling with young children, ski equipment and winter clothing, every extra distance matters.

Another common mistake is skipping ski lessons. Parents mean well, but children often learn faster and have more fun with a professional ski instructor who has experience teaching young skiers.

The Best Memories Are Often Made Off the Slopes

When families look back on their ski holiday, it is rarely the number of runs they remember most. Instead, it is the small moments that stay with them. The first sled ride down a snowy hill. A walk through a picturesque snow covered village. A child proudly showing that they can stop on their skis all by themselves. A ski holiday with young children is less about performance and more about creating experiences together. That is exactly what makes a family holiday in Austria so special.

A Relaxing Ski Holiday Starts with the Right Foundation

Choosing a family friendly ski resort, comfortable accommodation and allowing enough time to relax creates the perfect foundation for a successful holiday.
