Ski Holidays in Austria with Young Children: What Really Works (and What Doesn't)?

By: Team ChaletsPlus at 16 June 2026

A ski holiday with young children is very different from a ski trip with adults. While you may have spent entire days on the slopes in the past, family ski holidays are all about enjoying quality time together. With the right preparation, a ski holiday in Austria can become a wonderful experience for the whole family. However, some choices can make the trip unnecessarily challenging. The purpose of this blog is to help parents plan a relaxed ski holiday with young children. Based on the experiences of our guests, we share what works well in practice and what is best avoided.

Ski Holidays with Young Children Require a Different Approach

A ski holiday with young children is probably quite different from what you're used to. Instead of being the first one on the lift and skiing until the end of the day, it's now all about spending quality time together. And honestly, that's exactly what makes a family ski holiday so special.  Many parents discover that the best memories are not made during long days on the slopes, but in the moments in between. A child's first time on skis, building a snowman together, or enjoying a hot chocolate on a sunny terrace. Those are the memories you'll still be talking about long after the holiday is over.

When planning a ski holiday, many families focus on the number of kilometres of slopes available. Understandable, but with young children, other things often matter much more. A family friendly ski resort, good ski schools and child friendly facilities can make all the difference.

That's why regions such as the Wildkogel Arena, Hochkönig, Zell am See Kaprun and the Zillertal Arena are so popular with families. Here, children can learn to ski in a fun and relaxed way, while parents enjoy the mountains and the welcoming atmosphere.

Doing Less Often Means Enjoying More

Perhaps the most important advice we can give is this: don't try to fit everything into one week. Many parents arrive with the idea that they want to ski as much as possible every day. In reality, things often work differently with young children. A morning ski lesson is usually enough. Afterwards, there is plenty of time for sledding, playing in the snow or simply warming up in the chalet. That balance keeps children excited and happy throughout the holiday. They don't need to spend all day on the slopes to have a fantastic ski vacation.

Your choice of accommodation also plays an important role. A chalet close to the slopes offers both convenience and flexibility. If a child gets tired or needs an afternoon nap, you're back at your accommodation within minutes. It may sound like a small detail, but it can make a big difference during your holiday. Many families also appreciate the freedom that comes with staying in a private chalet. The children can go to bed early while parents enjoy a relaxed evening, a good meal or some time in the sauna. No schedules, no crowds, just a holiday at your own pace.

The Best Memories Are Often Made Away from the Slopes

When families look back on their ski holiday, it's rarely the number of runs they remember most. Instead, it's the small moments that make the trip special. A child learning to stop on skis for the first time. A sled ride that's a little faster than expected. Or a walk through a snow covered mountain village while snowflakes gently fall from the sky. A ski holiday with young children is less about performance and more about sharing experiences together. Once you embrace that idea, it's easy to understand why so many families return to Austria year after year.

By choosing a family friendly ski resort, a comfortable chalet and leaving room for spontaneous moments, you're creating the foundation for a holiday everyone will enjoy. And perhaps more importantly, for memories that will last long after the snow has melted.
