The ski region of Mauterndorf, Grosseck-Speiereck is a family-oriented ski region in the middle of the Lungau (1100 m – 2400 m). Grosseck-Speiereck is not the only ski region, Katschberg(120 km of slopes), Fanningberg (41 km) and Obertauern(100 km) all form part of the Lungau. Mauterndorf and St. Michael have an extensive and beautiful network of cross-country skiing routes that you can join from your doorstep.

Mauterndorf in the Lungau region is a pleasant winter sports village with a historical village centre, situated at an altitude of 1100 metres. This friendly village has everything you need for an ideal family holiday. The skiing area Grosseck Speiereck is an ideal family skiing accommodation with a large number of blue and red runs. A few black runs offer challenges to the more advanced skiers.

In Mauterndorf
The cosy and historical village centre of Mauterndorf offers restaurants and shops. Bread is available at the local bakery, the butcher offers a range of regional specialities and the restaurant staff is dressed in typical traditional Austrian attire. There are a number of bars in which to enjoy an après-ski. Every winter sports lover feels at home in Mauterndorf!

Skiing area Mauterndorf/ Grosseck Speiereck
The area surrounding Mauterndorf is modern but still has an authentic feel to it. There are, for example, a very fast cable car line, modern chair lifts and beautiful slopes and there are virtually no waiting times in this area! After a tiring and active day on your skis, you can visit one of the various “schirmbars” or ski huts for après-ski drinks. The skiing area of Mauterndorf,  Grosseck-Speiereck is a family-friendly skiing area in the centre of the Lungau (1100 m - 2400 m). The area is virtually assured of snow and is also the area with the most hours of sun in Austria. The area has a total of 47 km of pistes, of which 23 km blue runs, 17 km red runs and 7 km black runs. It is a very divers skiing area with a long descent to Mauterndorf (4.5 km). There are also a few very nice off-the-slope options for powder lovers!

Skiing area Obertauern
The skiing area Obertauern is located approx. 15 minutes by car from Mauterndorf. It is an area in the Alps with an almost 100% snow guarantee. The area offers perfect snow conditions from the end of November until the beginning of May, and so the skiing season of the Obertauern is no less than 160 days ! The area varies in altitude from 1630 to 2313 metres with 26 modern lifts that link up well with one another. The area offers a total of 100 km of runs, mainly blue and red. This skiing area is very suitable for beginners; there is a black run approx. 4 km long for the more experienced skier. There are also challenging ski routes and off-piste descents and you can ski in the evening on a lit run.

Skiing areas Lungau
In addition to Grosseck-Speiereck (50 km) the skiing areas Katschberg/ Aineck (approx. 70 km pistes), Fanningberg (approx. 30 km pistes) and Obertauern (approx. 100 km) all make up part of Lungau and can be reached from Mauterndorf by car within 10 to 20 minutes. There is also an excellent ski bus service between the skiing areas. Ski buses are free if you have a valid ski pass. The Lungauer ski buses provide a comfortable ride to all the ski regions in Lungau every hour. Busses run every 15 minutes from Mauterndorf to the skiing area Grosseck Speiereck.

The Lungo ski pass
The LUNGO ski pass allows you limitless skiing. This pass entitles you to access to all of the Lungauer skiing areas and small ski-lifts, including the skiing area Obertauern. No less tan 300 km of piste, from Katschberg all the way to Obertauern.

Snowboarding
The skiing area Katschberg accommodates a half-pipe and there is a Funpark in the Fanningberg skiing area. Snowboarders can live it up in Snowpark the Spot in skiing area Obertauern with a variety of Easy-Lines and Medium Lines. Snowboarding off-piste is also an option here.

Cross-country skiing
Mauterndorf also offers an extremely large and very lovely cross-country skiing network. The ski run runs past the front of the house, you can jump in any time! Cross-country skiers can choose between excellent runs in the valley or the high routes on the Katschberg and Obertauern. All in all, the Lungau offers around 30 cross-country runs.

Winter activities
Of course, besides skiing, Mauterndorf has much more to offer, winter hikes for example. A popular hiking route leads you from the historical market square to the skiing centre of Mauterndorf; the route brings you past the impressive castle of Mauterndorf. You can warm up after your hike in the restaurant Schi Alm, after which you can start the hike back. The beautiful winter landscape in Lungau is also the perfect location for a horse-sleigh ride. You can also skate on the natural skating rink next to the public swimming pool.

Tobogganing
You can enjoy tobogganing in the evenings at the Mauterndorf fortress on a natural tobogganing run with a length of 300 m. There are also various other tobogganing options in vicinity of the ski-lift.
